Why Medicaid Matters

At the Rocky Mountain MS Center, we are committed to providing access to comprehensive, life-affirming care for individuals and families living with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions, regardless of where they live or how much they earn.

A major federal budget bill (H.R. 1) has recently passed the House of Representatives in Washington, potentially bringing devastating cuts to Medicaid that would mean a fundamental shift in who has access to critical medical care.

For many of the people we serve, Medicaid is a critical link in that care. Through our partnership with both the University of Colorado Hospital and Denver Health, we provide multidisciplinary MS care to a large number of patients who rely on Medicaid. In rural areas across Colorado, Medicaid helps connect patients to vital neurology services, therapies, and medications they would not otherwise be able to access. And at our King Adult Day Enrichment Program (KADEP), Medicaid is what makes it possible for the majority of our participants to access the care, support, and community that help them live full and meaningful lives.

The proposed cuts to Medicaid would be disastrous. These cuts would severely impact Medicaid for older adults, people in nursing homes, children, people with disabilities, home care providers, and families.

Colorado Congressional Members Who Voted Against H.R. 1

Subject: Protect Medicaid - Thank you for voting No on H.R. 1

Message:

I’m a constituent writing to THANK YOU for voting against H.R. 1 and saying ‘no’ to Medicaid cuts! I hope that you’ll continue to stand strong against future votes on Medicaid cuts. H.R. 1 will harm Coloradans who rely on Medicaid by decreasing the amount of money Colorado has to cover services and greatly increasing the amount of money that the state will need to fund to administer these new requirements. Both of these things will mean that the people who need Medicaid will receive fewer benefits and less care. Thank you for voting with Coloradans who rely on Medicaid supports and services to live full and independent lives. As you know, the proposed cuts to Medicaid will be disastrous. These cuts will gut Medicaid for older adults, people in nursing homes, children, people with disabilities, home care providers, and families. And adding more burdensome red tape to Medicaid, like work requirements, are just cuts by another name as they will make it harder for people to navigate an already complex system and threaten coverage for all Medicaid enrollees in Colorado. Many rural health care providers are struggling, including hospitals and clinics. Health care cuts will put rural providers at extreme risk of closing their doors in areas where Coloradans would have no alternative sources of care. If Congress makes these devastating cuts, our health coverage and care systems will be in severe peril and the costs of health care will spike. This will also undermine Colorado's economy, putting tens of thousands of jobs at risk. This is not a solution. Coloradans can’t afford these cuts and resoundingly rejected similar efforts in the past. Thank you again for your vote to protect Medicaid. I am asking you to protect our care and to continue loudly, clearly, and urgently opposing cuts to Medicaid.
