Support HB23-1126 to keep medical debt off Coloradans' credit reports!
Medical debt is a major problem in Colorado: 1 in 8 Coloradans has medical debt in collections.
Medical debt harms Coloradans in many ways. When someone cannot afford a medical expense and their bill goes to collections, information about that medical debt can be included on their credit report. This, in turn, harms the person’s credit score, creating barriers to getting a loan, renting an apartment, and even getting a job.
But medical debt is not a choice. And medical debt information is a bad predictor of “creditworthiness.” Research shows that people with medical debt make on-time payments at much higher rates than their credit scores indicate.
House Bill 23-1126 would stop medical debt from being included on Coloradans’ credit reports and factored into their credit scores.
House Bill 23-1126 would help Coloradans like Kayce, who at 19 needed to have life-saving heart surgery. Despite having health insurance, Kayce ended up with $56,000 in medical bills. On top of the stress of their bills, their medical debt prevented them from renting a home or being approved for a car loan. "It was not my fault that my heart gave out at 19, but man, did I pay the price," Kayce says.
No Coloradan should face barriers to housing, economic stability, and opportunity simply because they needed medical care.
