On October 27, the Colorado Division of Insurance issued a press release about how Congressional inaction has caused health insurance costs to double for 225,000 hardworking Coloradans. With open enrollment beginning on November 1, it's important to know that millions of individuals, including those living with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions, rely on premium tax credits to afford health care coverage.

The federal government remains shut down, and the debate over funding has major consequences for families’ health and wellbeing. Proposals on the table could drive up healthcare costs and put coverage at risk for millions of Americans. I’m writing to urge you to take action to extend the enhanced premium tax credits. If these credits expire, Coloradans who remain eligible will see average increases of about 101% in their monthly premiums, and roughly 36,000 people will lose their tax credits altogether. For many, that could mean losing health coverage or facing difficult financial tradeoffs between health care and other essential needs. This change comes at a time when many families are already managing higher costs of living, inflation, and other economic pressures. The impact will be especially significant in rural areas, where premiums are already higher and options are more limited. Without these credits, more than 100,000 Coloradans could lose coverage, shifting costs onto families and communities, increasing medical debt, and straining local providers and hospitals. The loss of these supports would represent an estimated $230 million per year in added costs for Colorado residents. These credits have been critical in helping Coloradans access affordable health coverage. I urge you to work to extend them and ensure continued stability and affordability in our health care system.
